Our top picks in the local area

For families

Boboli Gardens offer families the ideal opportunity to climb trees, run around and play together plus plenty of places to buy a refreshing gelato on a warm evening after you have finished your picnic.

For romance

The Duomo or Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is quite possibly the most romantic location in the city.  The 13th century dome and building designed by Arnolfo de Cambio really is the ultimate symbol of the city.  With astoundingly simple design and stunning frescoes, the entrance into the building is free but if you want to climb the 463 steps to the top of the Duomo there is a small fee. That said, the fee you pay is worth it many times over once you have caught your breathe back and drink in the views of the city skyline.

For culture

Love art or loathe it, while you in Florence there is one thing to see even if you do not see anything else and that thing is Michelangelo’s David.  Made from smooth, cool marble this simple and magnificent sculpture is much larger in life than it appears in pictures.  Of course the attraction is pretty crowded and you cannot take photographs but the pricey entrance ticket to the museum is worth it to be able to rest you gaze on this image of biblical perfection.

For shopping

The Florence based brand Gucci with its distinctive style knows the true meaning of the word chic.  With a veritable choice of clothing, this house is particularly noted for its flair when it comes to the design of accessories such as wallets, purses, bags and shoes.  True fashionistas and shopaholics will love the sumptuous Florence based shop and take the opportunity to shop until they drop.

For eating out

Overlooking the Pitti Palace, Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina is a city institution and while on the pricey side, is well worth the money spent for the fine foods and wine on the menu.  The waiters and staff really know there stuff and are happy to recommend which wine goes with what from their extensive cellar, which contains some sublime and very old bottles. The sunny but refined tastes contained in the traditional and very Italian food are just sensational and the house pastas, particularly the ravioli, are second to none.

For nightlife

Montecarla is located close to the Boboli Gardens and this decadent dens is awash with leopard skin prints, exotic decor and dark corners. It has a loyal, local crowd but any visitor is always welcomed in this refined drinking hole.
